World Environment Day to be celebrated on tomorrow, June 5th is a great opportunity to focus on electricity conservation. The majority of the electricity we use is generated by coal based power plants, conserving electricity reduces carbon emissions.
Conserving energy is an important way to reduce strain on the environment. Adoption of following sustainable practices of energy conservation can make significant impact, said Sri Musharraf Faruqui, IAS, Chairman & Managing Director of TGSPDCL.
Switch to LED Lighting: Replace traditional incandescent or CFL bulbs with LED lights, which consume 75-80% less electricity.
Unplug Idle Electronics: Devices like mobile chargers, TVs, and microwaves draw phantom power when plugged in. Use power strips or manually unplug devices.
Optimize Ceiling Fans and ACs: Set ceiling fans to optimal speeds and maintain them for efficiency. For air conditioners, set temperatures to 24-26°C, as recommended by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), and clean filters monthly to reduce energy use.
Use BEE Star-Rated Appliances: Choose appliances with 5-star or high-star ratings from BEE, such as refrigerators, ACs, and washing machines, which are designed to consume less electricity.
Leverage Solar Power: Install solar water heaters or rooftop solar panels to reduce reliance on grid electricity.
Maximize Natural Light and Ventilation: Open windows and curtains during the day to reduce lighting needs. Design homes with cross-ventilation to minimize fan or AC usage.
Use Energy-Saving Modes: Enable power-saving settings on computers, TVs, and other electronics. This is especially relevant in urban areas with high gadget usage.
